Two pups released on the coast between Anamur and Gazipaşa, Cilicia, Mersin

In cooperation with Turkish Ministry of Environment & Forestry and Coast Guard and SAD-AFAG, two monk seal pups have been released along the coast between Anamur and Gazipaşa, southern Türkiye, one of the most suitable monk seal habitats in the country in 2nd April 2011.

The pups were first transported from Foça to Bozyazı and then transferred to Coast Guard boat in Bozyazı port to reach the actual release site by sea. The pups were then transported to the release shore via a zodiac boat of the Coast Guard and released on a remote beach. The pups stayed on the beach around 5 minutes after release and soon entered the sea successively. They did not seperate and moved together disappearing in the coastal waters. SAD-AFAG, Coast Guard and Turkish Ministry of Environment & Forestry Mersin District Directorate staff have been monitoring the site since the release date in order to sight or collect any sighting data relevant to the seals. As a result of both field surveys and contacts with the local people In Anamur, Melleç and Kaledran including fishermen by the above organizations, no sighting of pups were recorded until now and no information has been gathered from the local people about any monk seal pups injured, ailing or dead, or imprinted to human. The area has relatively low density of human population and fishery activities compared to other coastal zones around the area as well as other parts of Turkish coasts.

The new technique on the feeding of monk seal pups during rehabilitation will be shared by SAD-AFAG with the monk seal conservation community. It is believed that the time, effort and money are saved with this new technique for orphan pups under rehabilitation while pup(s) are in less interaction with the carers, which will reduce the potential of pups imprinted to human due to close contact especially during force feeding sessions.

Monk seal pups to be released

After having a rehab period of total 105 days, i.e. 3,5 months, two monk seal pups to be released on 2nd April 2011 along the pristine and remote coasts between Gazipaşa (Antalya) and Anamur (Mersin). The release area is among the twelve Important Monk Seal Sites in Türkiye as agreed by National Monk Seal Committee Members coordinated by Turkish Ministry of Environment & Forest. The release shall be participated by Ministry of Environment & Forest, Izmir Province Directorate of Env & Forest, Turkish Coast Guard and SAD-AFAG.

Two pups have been under rehabilitation and care in Foça Med.Monk Seal Rehab Center since 18th December 2010, operated in cooperation by Foça Municipality, İzmir Greater Municipality and SAD-AFAG. The general health conditions of the seals are good and they do not have any sicknesses or abnormality. Blood and feace sampling as well as nostril secretion samples were taken by the vets from the veterinary policlinic in İzmir on 31st March 2011 accompanied by EPASA staff and SAD-AFAG team and the results have shown that the seal pups do not have sickness symptoms. Rehab team has shown special attention not to get in touch or interaction with seal pups during feeding and cleaning sessions in the facility. As a result, the seals always keep distance to the carers and even remain away from the carers either hiding inside the “artificial cavern” in the unit or diving in the pool staying long inside. The pups have been observed by the team members from a hide established outside the unit with small openings looking inside the pool. Also the staff veterinery from Izmir Province Directorate of Env & Forest visited the unit several time and made observations together with EPASA’s staff including a biologist and Ozan Veryeri and concluded that overall impression of the monk seal pups are healthy and they showed a shy behaviour of Med. monk seals.

Meanwhile, SAD-AFAG had some difficulty in between 19 February and 18 March due to vet Avni Gök from Izmir Greater Municipality. During this blind period only A.Gök had continued the feeding and cleaning of the unit. Later, MoEF has issued an official letter to remove vet Avni Gök and call SAD-AFAG on duty back. The weighs of seal pups are 34 kg and 37 kg and lenghts are 128 cm and 135 cm respectively as of 1 April 2011. The team has put all efforts to make seals gain physical and behavioral capacity to adopt to nature. By the end of March 2011, the rehab team has concluded that seals have convenient level of rehab for release to wild life referring their ability of hunting behaviour on various species and condition of health for adaptation to natural life.

Coast Guard Command and Gendarmery have informed SAD-AFAG about two monk seal (Monachus monachus) pups in 18th December 2010 from Bozyazı region, Mersin and Kas region, Antalya respectively. Meanwhile Mehmet Sarı has informed Ministry of Environment & Forest Mersin District Directorate about the seal pup found in Bozyazı. Upon arrival of SAD-AFAG rescue team on the sites, at 24.00 hours in 18th December and 03.30 hours in 19th December, both seals are met and first interventions were made succesfully by Vet Avni Gök, Ayhan Tonguç and Erkin Tonguç providing ORS. Ministry of Environment staff including a Vet assisted the transport of Mersin seal until Kemer town of Antalya to save time to meet SAD-AFAG rehab team on the half way as well as assisting the ORS application for the pups (see the map below). It is considered that the heavy storm happened in 15th December in the Mediterranean part of Türkiye may cause the seperation of mothers and pups who were found in the same day, 18th December. Both pups are female and estimated as 15-20 days old when they were found on site. Read the rest of this entry »
